Charter City
City residents,
The City of Litchfield Park is in the planning process to become what is known as a "charter city". Of the 91 cities and towns in Arizona, 19 are charter cities. There has not been a new charter city in Arizona since 1982.
There are many advantages to being a charter city as it gives the local citizens much more control over how their local government operates vs. being largely guided by state statutes. There are, of course, many steps in the two-year process to become a charter city including two elections.
A key part of this process is electing a committee of at least 14 city citizens to be "freeholders". The elected “freeholders” create the new city charter which would go to the city voters for consideration.
The City will be holding an informational meeting on the charter city process on Thursday, March 23rd at 6pm at the Litchfield Library Community Room.
